UV students at RTC

The Justice League of U.V.

I brought my class to a court observation at the Regional Trial Court Branch13 of executive Judge Meinardo Paredes. We had a great time talking with suspects, and almost becoming a suspect (joke), observing manners and habits of lawyers and the Judge. It is prayed for and hoped that students will get a boost of enthusiasm and love for legal gobbledegook.

There were 15 mutants err students in attendance. It truly was an unforgettable experience, actually its my first time bringing students to observe court trials. My last court observation was eons ago for the trial of a priest who 'ran over' my sisters foot; which fortunately is still well.

That trip was made possible by the following:
Mr. Nelson Sungahid, the clerk of court of Branch 13;who is a product of U.V. and was once a working student. It's remarkable how U.V. changed the lives of people.

Mr. Jayson, Merson who was kind enough to lend us the fantastic vehicle and offered to drive us to court and back to school. I have no doubt that you have the testicular fortitude to go where your dreams want you to do.

Dean Estrella Navarro
For trusting this 'gifted-child,' who O.D.'d on Promil Milk, to teach students a thing or two about life, law and the hangups of living.

The morality of blogging

I have been reading and cross checking various blogs.

I realized that people had a chance to see over a person's thoughts and minds through a blog.

Sometimes, bloggers write their feelings in it.
Sometimes, people don't get their feelings.
Sometimes, they are misunderstood
Often time, it would lead to a misunderstanding.

I understand I might have unconsciously offended people through this blog.
I could have posted their test papers or their pictures but I choose not to.

I am reminded of the Diary nature of blogs. Blogs are always a diary, nothing more nothing less. If by what I have written, I could have hurt people. I apologize.

Cheaters go to hell.

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power...Green Lantern's light!

I was checking the test papers of my taxation 3:30-5pm TTh class.

I actually read their answers. I finished checking one test paper and gave it a score of 2.0+ but then after 3 more test papers I chanced upon the same answer. I juxtaposed both test papers and realized that both were exact photo copies of each other save for an occasional error in spelling. It breaks my heart!

I gave them the guide questions so that they would be able to prepare, review and study the questions that will may come out in the exam. Not to have them abuse it for questionable methods.

Am I happy that I failed them in the midterm?
Is it a Vendetta?
Am I the Punisher?

The answers to these, questions posted, are in the negative. In this 2nd Semester, this is the second time this happened and I am seriously thinking about changing my style of giving my students a guide questions for the exam; maybe I should just give them the coverage. As always I harbor no ill will towards them, I can only sigh out of exasperation, perspiration, and expiration.

I will guide them and let them see the errors of their ways.
I should try to experiment for the semi-final ... Change is a good thing, I hope.

Random Drug testing for college professors

The ChEd, according to inquirer, is set to implement random drug testing in various colleges. Those found with substance abuse are to be admitted to a rehab program and/or prohibited to teach.

IMHO it is a nice practice on a piece of paper but in reality it would be troublesome for the following factors:

1. the most common drug testing is by urine sample
  • My nursing students should know that this procedure is a bit trouble some as a person who uses prescription drugs on a maintenance basis has the possibility of producing a FALSE positive result, any chemist can list down this drugs which may trigger false positive results but I am no chemist. When this happens, without any due process, a person can be immediately labeled as a Drug addict when in fact he is taking prescription medicines as per advice of his doctor.
2. The use Urine analysis to determine drug use is highly debatable as the system can be cheated by the use of a adulterants or simple switching of urine. I wonder what would happen if you switched your urine with a dogs urine for drug testing, would they notice the difference?

3. Random Urine testing can not detect recent use of drugs, it can only detect drugs used as long as five days.

I know of a teacher, from another university, who used drugs but then again, who am I to judge. People change, habits change with the grace of God. I am afraid of a totalitarian government, one where we have no freedom; a place where we give up freedom for safety, convenience and economic standing.

Iraninan Visayanian Student shot dead

Iranian UV Student shot dead

His necklace and Nokia 91 cellphone was intact but his wallet is missing. Ashkan Aminian will be missed by the UV community although he has never been under me; he was set to graduate this March.

Let us pray for the eternal repose of his soul.

Quo Vadis est amore?

As February comes to a close, we celebrate the month of love. Not the love making, never mind the fact that motels / hotels are so full on the 14th. For some odd reasons, I saw these two students (one of which was my student). I offered to take a shot of them, they gamely posed for a 'sweet photo'.

Are they lovers or 'just friends'? those were never my concern. This shot reminds me of a time when I was a young, hormone driven person. Not to say that the parties herein are driven by pheromones. I just find it sweet that a guy can be a good friend to a girl.

I salute them for reminding me of love. Don't you ever believe in the urban myth about couples on a photo together would end up parting ways. As I parting shot, I wonder where is the guys left hand on the picture? What is he touching?

Ah love... thy will be done!

Cebu City
We Celebrated the Sinulog on 17 and 18 of this month. Those dates had me walking from Gen. Maxillom Ave. to Sto Nino Church, yes two straight days of walking to and fro. On my walks, I chanced to see the picture here in.

Amusing that people would do 'cosplay' with the Child Jesus. Imagine the irony of a son of God playing as a bad cop; In this country cops are more likely to be feared than respected. There are some theological similarities since God in the old testament was feared for punishing people who violated his covenant but it all changed with the new testament God became a loving and forgiving God.

The Sto Nino is a child like reflection of our innocence. On that we should never let go in our lives. Children are more likely to follow God, they have the gift of purity. As we celebrate the feast of the birth of Catholicism in the Philippines, let us ponder on the blessing that we have received and be thankful for them.

Philippine Consititution, anyone?

A lot of students have been asking me where they can score a copy of the Philippine Constitution for free. I scoffed at the idea of my student asking me to post it on my blog. I contemplated on the idea and found some merit to it.

One must have the following when downloading the Philippine Constitution:
A computer
Internet connection (you can save the file to a usb flash disk)
Printer
Adobe reader (I suggest you google foxit reader as the file is smaller)
at least 45pages of bond paper short size.

If you have all of those then feel free to download it it here

A relaxing class

I gave an oral exam for my Philippine constitution class at Gullas Medical School in Banilad, Cebu City. I find it amusing that students are so relaxed with the class that even if they had finished their turn for the oral exam, they would stay to listen to the answers of their classmates and have a fun time laughing either at my antics or one of the students.

Here is a stolen photo of a student relaxing at my class. I showed his picture to the entire class and to himself. We had a great time laughing, I told him I would post his picture on the net. For some odd reasons, I forget his name.

The coverage was Articles 4-5 of the 1987 Phil. Constitution. I am very blessed to have such a class that you can practically smell their enthusiasm for attending my class. I can only hope and pray that it would be a unforgettable and enjoyable experience for them; that would be my living legacy for all. We are just passing in this world, if by some chance I can be remembered then I can consider myself to have fulfilled my mission: to be able to touch the lives of people and make a difference in their life.

It is in unguarded moments, like in the photo, that makes teaching a worthwhile profession for me.

I thank each and everyone of them from the deepts of my heart for making teaching a fun experience for me, for reminding me that all of us are kids at heart.

Sick Science

Science has a sick sense of humor at times!

I just accompanied my Grandma, who is an octogenarian, to visit her gastro endocrinologist for her annual check-up. Tomorrow she will get her annual endoscopy. Like most procedures it would require a cathartic prior to the endoscopy.

I find it funny that someone would have to ram something up someone's asshole. I find it so amusing that I asked myself if gays or lesbians would have a field day following the instructions to such a sick medicine. Maybe I should try one on but then again. I shudder at the thought of it.

Red Mobile: sulit ba ang .50 na tawag?

Last November 2008, Red Mobile, formerly known as Umobile, was launched in the Philippines. It was purchased by Smart Communications for a hefty sum of money.

Rumors has it that Smart decided to buy Umobile for the use of its 3G license. It is a common knowledge that Smart Bro needs a 3G license to improve their services.

Out of curiosity my GF egged me (as if my own set of eggs are not enough for her) to inquire about it and here are my findings.
Red Mobile offers the following to post paid subscribers:
.50 Calls / text / MMS for red to red
It requires a 3G phone (which is expensive)

Things that should have warned me prior to using RED.
1. Rarity of prepaid load cards
2. No post paid plans
Despite these tall tale signs out of love or stupidity (frankly I don't know which is which) I decided to buy a pair of sim. It was fine for the first two days but lately little changes has been taking place (5pm to 11am):
  • Red to Red calls do not last for 2-5minutes
  • Message sending failed (even if with load) but the said text was actually received by intended recipient
  • My mom, who is on Smart, called me and the call did not last for 3minutes
  • Prepaid load cards are so rare, most retailer loads do not know how to load red mobile
I recall the Red Mobile Manual congratulating me for turning Red. My eyes turn red after using red. As a consequence of this. I have never been so happy to part with a Red Mobile SIM for free. Yes, I will even deliver it to your door step with a smile assuming you are within the vicinity of Cebu City.

The first to comment on this post will win a red mobile (guaranteed sealed and unused).

Heroes: Are you values in order?

This country celebrates Manny Pacquiao as he defeated Oscar Dela Hoya.

I can only stare in awe. This country is celebrating a person who beats people to oblivion, as sports. We celebrate a person for winning in a 'exhibition' match.

We are more eager to celebrate the arrival of our 'national fist'; almost all news papers talk about him. When a Child saves a baby from a life threatening fire or a near death experience. Do we feel the same degree of jubilation? We celebrate someone for beating up some guy and getting paid for it?

When a Filipino wins a match his fellow filipino are quick to point out that the match is 'scripted'. When Mansueto 'Onyok' Velasco won Gold in the South East Asia games. Did the whole country had the same state of proudness as it showed to pacquiao?

When the smoke has cleared the answers are still uncertain. Are our values in the proper order?!!?

God does have a sense of humor

The Lord does have a sense of humor. Just as things didn't go well for me today. I felt rubbish for comparing my gf to my exes. Lo and behold I looked up at the sky. As if God said with a raspy voice 'why so serioooouss?'

I still have not finished reading WATCHMEN comic for the 2nd time. I love the works of Allan Moore, it takes 2-3 readings to understand his work. Its like watching a good film and being able to replay it.

Oh btw, in new year or a day after you will see moon and venus.. so its like winking at you.

Our lady of Oslob

The 150 year old image of our lady of immaculate heart of Mary, from the Parish of Oslob Cebu, visited the University of the Visayas today. The Church was gutted by fire twice, the latest was this year; all through out the 2 fires the church was burned down but the statue of Mama Mary was able to survive the two fires.

Rumor has it, the same statue was stolen, one can notice the conspicuous absence of the crown on the statue. Antique collector thieves preyed (yes they did not PRAY) on the image only to be found out by authorities, the next day the house of the purchaser of the stolen image was burned by fire together with the would be buyer. It gave a new meaning to the word: Gaba.

The bottom picture is taken from the back of the statue. People say that such is a miraculous sign whilst naysayers, pragmatist and atheist dismiss the claim of a silhouette of the face of the virgin Mary as pure coincidence. These are subject to the inquiry from a council of the archdiocese to determine the veracity of the claim.

I do not mind the truth or falsity of the miracle tag, as long as it becomes an instrument to awaken the people to prayer.

Be sure to drop by and say a prayer of two to the mother of Jesus Christ.

As they say in latin: crede quod habes, et habes

it means: Believe that you have it, and you do

Movie review

Since I had very few students today, I decided to take a break and watch a movie alone since last year I seldom watch movies alone, blame that on the girl friend.

I find it odd that the new bond film can not be original in terms of action sequences. The roof top action scenes has been done before in Bourne Identity.

There are no love scenes, they just imply it. The ending leaves much to be desired.

In short, I am not happy Casino Royale is a better film than this one.

some of the best pic I have seen on the net so far

Finally found another good use for the internet. Pictures like these makes surfing more amusing. Great finds don't you think?

All souls day

As most people would have noticed by now. I rarely take pictures of myself, a photographer rarely takes pictures (pauses for effect) of himself.

There are pictures that I am proud of though. These pictures were taken in my father's home town at Maya daan bantayan Cebu (I was born in Makati thus I consider Pasay as my home town even if Pasay would not consider me as from that place).

The house, in the picture, is the result of blood, sweat and tears of my father; it is his house and not mine. Again, his blood, sweat and tears; Not mine. His house has a Pink motif; its like a huge pink doll house for girls.

I am proud of the picture taken on a sunny day, its wonderful what my 'old' K800i can do despite being old by today's standards.

As for the last picture, its my cousin, grandfather and my sister (from left to right). Mind you the left and the right pictures are of people who are still alive and is no way a memorial to them. My grandfather used to be that handsome, I wonder how he became less good looking as he ages. Kinda like how a grape becomes a raisin; which is what will happen to my testicles when I reach the age of 60. Let it be known that I really look up to my grandfather, although I have not met him personally I believed that he had the highest moral standards and better sexual prowess as evidenced by that fact that I have 6 uncles and 4 aunts.

Anyway, I hope all my loved ones who have gone before are enjoying a life in heaven. I hope to follow suit but not too soon.

IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING.

A few months back I cursed Timex but now I have to love watch republic, the distributor of timex. Why? Their shop allowed me to replace my timex, under warranty, with a more reliable brand name..

ADIDAS!

The response light twin is just fantastic although it is just 100m water resist, I love it except for the following quirks

When the digital time mode is off the light watch can not be turned on but the hands for the analog are readable anyway.

As a student of mine noticed, I have a penchant for collecting watches. So how many watches do I have?

Seiko Kinetic titanium
Citizen Eco-Drive
G-Shock G-7510 vibration watch
Adidas ADP1437 (latest)

As Humprey Bogart would say 'here's lookin' at ya, kid!'

Sexual Harasment by a teacher

SAN PEDRO, Laguna, Philippines—A professor at the De La Salle University, Dasmariñas has been arrested in an entrapment operation for allegedly harassing his 17-year-old student, police disclosed Monday morning.

Arnel Sanchez, 30, was arrested in an entrapment operation Thursday night in Cavite, said Inspector Agripina Batoctoy, chief of the Women and Children Protection Desk Cavite.

Batoctoy said in a phone interview on Monday that Sanchez, a teacher of criminal law,
had texted the student about a "special project" for her to pass his class.

The student claimed that the suspect had required her to have sex with him at the Four C Hotel in Dasmariñas, Cavite. The girl sought the help of the police, who set up the entrapment.

When they met at the hotel, Sanchez allegedly opted to have sex with the student inside his van, saying he wanted to save on hotel bills.

While they were in the van, the student made a missed call to the police as a cue for the arrest to be made.

Sanchez, a resident of the village of Burol, remains in the custody of the Dasmariñas police.

******

I do teach but I never did believe on special projects. Besides, a teacher who does things like that is really a low life. He either needs a girlfriend or just wanted to have an easy lay. I am just shocked the perp (perpetrator) is the same age as me.

HB 5043: Freedom of choice

The Catholic Church started a signature campaign against the Reproductive health bill. I am teaching sex education in college.

I believe everyone should be responsible for the choices they made. Fact: IUDs, condoms are readily available but what makes me more suspicious of this law is that the government will walk holding hands with some enterprising companies. I am sure our local KAKONG-GRESSMAN and SAY-NOTors and other 'public officials' will have a share of the pie.

What I abhor is the Chruch dictating to the people what is good/bad. Freedom of choice, we all have it. Your life, your future, your soul is no one's responsibility. So If I have used Condoms no one can damn my soul to hell except possibly God and my girlfriend.
